Behind the scenes of 20 Liters was an experience unlike anything we’d filmed before. With a crew of just two, we traveled through rural parts of Africa to follow the daily journey of women who walk miles to collect water for their villages. It pushed us far outside our comfort zone—late-night drives on unfamiliar roads, travel hiccups, and the process of learning and respecting a culture completely different from our own. Every moment stretched us, challenged us, and ultimately reshaped the way we think about storytelling.
Because the film was designed to be experiential, our approach behind the camera was intentionally patient and immersive. Long, unbroken scenes and sound-driven moments allowed the weight of each step, each container, and each mile to settle with the viewer. Capturing those details required slowing down, listening, and being present. In the end, the project became more than a short film—it became a window into the resilience and reality of the women who do this every day, and a powerful learning experience for our team.
